Did you
not know that King Charles II passed through Stourbridge during the night
of 3/4 September 1651 and during his escape northwards from defeat at the
Battle of Worcester. Indeed it is believed that he also stoped for refreshment
at an inn - reputedly on the corner of High Street and Kinver Street at Wordsley
and now a fancy dress shop. It is recorded that during their passage through
Stourbridge, in an effort to disguise themselves, they spoke loudly in French!
Today The Monarch's Way, a long distrance footpath of some 610 miles in total
which follows the king's escape, passes through Stourbridge, on its way north
and then south. After six excitng weeks of pursuit the king eventually made
good his escape to France where he remained in exile until his restoration
in 1660. A very importatnt part of this country's constitutional history!

NO to Tesco in Stourbridge, no need. That simple. Mick Wood (received 9 July 01) Hello Colin, I have just been looking at the selection of old photos on the Stourbridge Website. You asked for opinions about the town. Being a Brummie who has lived in Wolverhampton (in the 1970's) I have visited Stourbridge many times in the past 15 years to visit friends living in High St. Wollaston. It's an attractive place for many reasons a very important one being its location. Being on the south western edge of the (now massive conurbation) of the West Midlands means that you can easily have access to big city thrills and spills (and ills!) by going into Birmingham, but at the same time you are near some of the most beautiful countryside by going to places around Bridgenorth, Ludlow, Church Stretton, Worcester and Hereford etc. Stourbridge centre is a lovely handleable, human size, easily walkable. As you mention , it still retains enough of its old buildings to maintain a definite atmosphere which is nice. The more recent shopping areas are discretely off to the side of the main thoroughfare as you walk into the town from the main bus station and anyway they're pleasant, they haven't gone down the awful path that the Bullring did in Birmingham. I'll certainly visit again the next time I travel back from the Middle East where I live and work. Thanks again for the photos. All the best, Paul Nicholas I am researching the life of my great great grandfather John HERRING who was born in Old Swinford in 1794 and transported to Australia in 1821. I have just come across you web site and find it most interesting and informative. I have been trying to purchased books about this area in order to further my research and understanding. One of your pages cites a book called 'Stourbridge in Times Past ' by H. Jack Haden. This book sounds just the thing but despite searches on various book shop sites, I have been unable to obtain a copy. Could you help, please? I particularly like the Time Warp rollovers. It is a very interesting and appropriate effect. Robyn Smith Sydney, Australia Thanks Robyn, if anyone wants to find out more about this visit Robyn's website http://members.optushome.com.au/robynsmith/index.htm Hi , I believe my BRETTELLs were quite involved in the glass industry in Black Country.
