As part of the major £50 million development in the town centre
which is now underway, New Street will be closed on Sunday May 6 from 7am
until 6pm to allow necessary works to take place. The
work is expected to be completed within the day but the closure may be extended
if necessary. To manage traffic flow in the town centre on the day, the one
way system on Market Street will be reversed. Motorists entering the town
centre via Bell Street will exit along Market Street, across Crown Square
and out through Crown Lane.
The closure
of New Street will then be followed by the closure of Bell Street’s
junction with the ring road. A legal closure notice allows the road to be
closed from Tuesday May 8 but the work may not start on this date. This closure
will be in place for a number of weeks while the road, situated between the
Crystal Leisure Centre and the former Bell Street Car Park, is transformed
into a two-way junction where motorists will be able to drive in and out of
town in future. During these works cars will still be able to use the New
Street exit from the town onto the ring road and will still be able to get
into town through High Street and Lower High Street. Meanwhile lorries and
larger commercial vehicles will be temporarily permitted to access Market
Street from the Lower High Street to avoid the tight turning circle at the
bottom of High Street onto Market Street.
