For
centuries people had dug into the soft sandstone of Kinver Edge to create
the famous cave houses. Occupancy was recorded in 1777 and in 1861 there were
11 cave dwellings. In the 1950's they were declared unfit for human habitation
and the families were relocated. However there was a cafe in the caves up
till 1967. Reconstruction of the main houses began in 1992 and today you can
visit one of them, faithfully restored complete with 1900's period furniture
and fittings. Opening times to follow soon.
