King Edwards Tunnels Official Response from Dudley MBC |
||||
| STOURBRIDGE
SAND CAVERNS For some time Dudley Council have been monitoring the condition and stability of the sand caverns situated below Stourbridge Ring Road. During the most recent inspection there was evidence indicating a deterioration in the condition and stability In view of the
position, shallow nature and condition of the caverns a decision has been
taken, on the grounds of public safety, to undertake stabilisation works.
Following consideration of a series of options the most suitable solution
is to bulk infill the caverns with clean, inert and natural sand. There are
no plans to use concrete, cement or other similar products. The main benefit
of using sand is that whilst it resolves the stability issues it does not
have any physical, chemical or archaeological impact on the environment or
the caverns. Prior to undertaking the physical works, which are planned to commence mid November 2008, there will be an opportunity for local interest groups to visit the caverns. This opportunity to visit will last for a period of a week during which time Birmingham University will be undertaking archaeological recordings and surveys. In addition professional photographic and digital video recordings are planned. Please note that any visit or access into the mine will be subject to Dudley Council’s Mine Managers satisfactory daily assessment of the caverns condition, stability and atmosphere. If you require any additional information please contact Roger Morgan, Section Engineer, Civil Engineering, Dudley Council on 01384 814431 or [email protected] Back to main King Edwards tunnels page |
