Hello, I am researching the life of my great uncle Joseph Edward Thompson who was KIA 22/12/1914. His parents ran the Railway Inn, Church St Stourbridge sometime between 1898 and 1914. There is an archive of the County Express newspaper dated 23/15/15 announcing his death and referencing his parents attachment to the Inn.The 1911 census shows the address as 49 Church Street. I have been unable to find any information or images. It seems that part of the Street has been demolished.
If you are able to point me to any further information I would be very grateful.
Yours sincerely Alan Stephenson (Rec'd 12th March 2023)

Hello Stourbridge, my name is Natalie and I live in Bewdley Worcestershire. I'm currently researching my family tree and have very little information about my maternal grandparents Sidney(Sid)Hill and Agnes(Dot)Hughes. They resided at 79 Grange Lane Lye during 60s,70s and start of 80s. I know my Grandad had 2 siblings- Aunty Elsie and Uncle George. My Nan didn't like the name she was christened with so she was known locally as Dot. Her mother died when she was very young, her father remarried a lady who already had a daughter-Great Aunt Doris Ryder who lived at Junction Road Stourbridge and was a cleaner at the local swimming baths in the 70s. Does anybody have any information about any of their relatives/parents. Natalie Smith (Rec'd 16 Feb 2024)

I am researching my fathers family history. I know that he and his siblings spent some time in Stourbridge cottage homes 1931-1938. would he have gone to School in the Homes or elsewhere? My father always said that a bomb dropped on the house and killed everyone. I have learnt this is not so! I have no pictures of my relatives. It really is a very sad story. Can you help please?

Hello from England. I am researching the Ellis family in the Stourbridge area (Wollaston is where most of them lived) and particularly their involvement with glassmaking. My ancestors were Stourbridge glassmakers for five generations. The family inevitably spreads into the other 19th century areas of gllssmaking including Bristol and Birminghham. I know that several branches of the family emigrated to America, so any connections there would be fantastic. I have 38 years worth of research that I will be happy to share.

I am researching our Llewellyn family tree and specifically looking for information on Richard Llewellyn (?-1849); wife unknown; children Mary Ann (b. 1839) and Henry John (b. 1844). Limited information I have suggests that family was in a workhouse, probably Stourbridge Union, and that Richard died in the workhouse, Mary Ann went into domestic service and Henry John went to live with an uncle. I am looking to confirm this information as well as find out wife of Richard, and his parents names. Thank you, Don Batema, Evansville, IN, USA, [email protected] (Rec'd 2nd Dec 2020)

I am trying to find out more about my paternal grandparents (Harry Sidney Lowe and Cassie May Simpson) and their siblings and families. Cassie's death certificate states she died in 1918 at Mount Lodge, High Street, Wordsley and this address also appears on a WW1 army document as the home address for one of her sisters, Marion Kate whose husband was Fred Stanier. I would be interested in any details about Mount Lodge, but also about the Lowe and Simpson families who seem to have been centred on Wordsley/Brierley Hill/Stourbridge/Kingswinford. The addresses which appear most on the censuses are Chapel Street, High Street, Mount Road, Belle Vue. Please contact me at [email protected] Many thanks. (Rec'd 24th Oct 2020)

RE: An update on trying to find out about John Davis

Hello again! I had contacted the Genealogy page about trying to find out about my great-great grandfather John Davis; I am happy to say that I have now found a fair lot of information, and I had the birth year wrong by about 10 years. There were some issues finding information because unfortunately the name "John Davis" is so common. I want to thank the Genealogy page for helping solve the mystery of who my great-great grandfather was, and I am continuing to find out about my family's roots in Stourbridge.
Thank you so much! Sincerely, Melissa Rust, Brantford, Ontario, Canada

Hi Folks, I am researching my 3rd Great Grandmother, Augusta Ann Alexander . Born in Stourbridge around 1826 to William Alexander and Sarah (nee Potter). Augusta and her brother Edward came to NZ on the vessel Clifford in 1842 - aged 16 and 18 respectively. In the 1841 census Edward and Sarah appear together in Windmill St Stourbridge . Augusta -then aged 15 is a straw worker in Mumps -Prestwich-cum-oldham. ?? We have an old family photo album which shows Edward Alexander- Williams brother was a successful wool and wine merchant in Ipswich .Sarah's Brother William Potter was an accounting clerk also in Ipswich .
Augusta married William Harvey in NZ and lived a long happy life in Pelorus Sound and a large family
In Augusta's will she left interests in unspecified Jamaican properties to her Daughters - the inference was that her father had been a merchant ? What happened to her parents William and Sarah Alexander?? A mystery to be solved
Thanks Mark NZ (Rec'd 7th May 2020)

I recently obtained a marriage certificate for JANE HAMMOND/JOSEPH WEBB as confirmation of information I have in my family tree, but it's left me with more questions. Jane HAMMOND was born in ENVILLE, Staffs, but for some reason she got married in EXNING, Suffolk. It’s quite likely there was Hammond family in that area. At the time of marriage Joseph’s residence was Stourbridge & Jane’s was Exning. If I have the right Joseph Webb (which I believe I do) I then have connections to the Coalbournhill Glassworks that used to exist & would love to find out more. Also my 4 x great grandfather WILLIAM HAMMOND (JANE's grandfather) was born in 1745 in Cheveley, Cambs. This is only about 5 miles from Exning. From at least 1772 he was living in ENVILLE, Staffs and employed by the 5th Earl of Stamford at Enville Hall as a head groom. I have got quite a lot of info from Enville Hall archives but have very little info about his wife BETTY BOARDMAN. If anyone can add further information that would be great. Thank you. I am hoping someone can help me with my genealogy.  My great grandmother Alice Jane Tyler was born in Stourbridge 1859. She is recorded in the Census of 1871 as being in the home of her grandmother Mary White (maybe visiting) in Croome D'Abitot (age 12) so I am assuming her mother's maiden name was White. She is recorded in the Census of 1881 as being a Domestic Servant in the household of Frederick Howell in Stourbridge. In the 1891 Census she may have been recorded in Edgbaston (if her middle initial was mis-transcribed) and that would explain how she met her future husband in that area.  In terms of her parents, the only Tyler to marry a White at around the right time was Thomas Tyler and Harriet White in Upton upon Severn 1850. There is another Alice Jane Tyler recorded as Christened in Old Swinford in 1860, but recorded as being born in 1853. Also, her parents appear to be James Francis Tyler and Harriet (coincidentally) Berry. She may have been adopted by her grandparents on her mother's side (Berry)  However, I can find no records of the second Alice being born, or in any Census, so was it the same person and year of birth mis-transcribed?  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Simon Haynes. (Rec'd 28th June 2018)

Hello I am currently researching my great grandfather's family, he was Arthur Thomas Knight (b 1893), his parents were Thomas H Knight and Louisa (nee Terry), they lived on Wheeler street, Stourbridge and had a bakery, Enville Street has come up in my research. Louisa's family the Terry's I believe owned or ran a sweet shop in the town. Thomas died in 1911 and Louisa then went on to marry Fredrick William Norris in 1914, remaining on Wheeler Street. Louisa's parents were Christopher Terry and Eliza (nee Hatton), as mentioned I believe they had a sweet shop, Christopher died in 1878 and I believe Eliza remarried and became Eliza Talbot.
I have visited the cemetry in Stourbirdge and although no headstone marking the grave now, know that Thomas H knight is buried there with I believe his wife and Eliza Talbot. Any information regarding the family names Knight, Terry, Hatton, Talbot and also Jenkins & Pearson from my great grandmothers side, parents Albert Jenkins and Annie (nee Pearson) would be very helpful.
If there are any photographs of the Sweet shop or the Bakery from around the 1880s these would be great to see.
My contact details are [email protected] and I know live in Studley, Warwickshire. (Rec'd 4th Aug 2017)

I live in Australia but am coming to Stourbridge in mid August 2016  to hopefully go some ways towards solving a family mystery. That is the identity of my mother's father. My mother who told me her name was May Hughes was born in Stourbridge in 1920.  Her twin brother was named Frank (perhaps became a butcher). Their mother Leah was according to my mother doing a work-house job in the laundry where she earnt a pittance. Her earliest memory is of crying on the doorstep of the cottage homes. She left at 14 and this opened up the world of a huge extended family in the area. Nadine Myatt (Rec'd 17th June 2016)

Approximately 100 years ago my grandmother Mary Elizabeth Share came to New Zealand and married my grandfather William Edward Vickers.  She was originally from Stourbridge.  My father told me two years before he died in 1983 - he knew absolutely nothing about his mother\'s family from Birmingham. In the last two months I have been completing some genealogy research into this particular side of my family.  Mary Elizabeth\'s father\'s name was George Harry Share and his wife\'s name was Annie. Annie\'s maiden name was Richards. They had the following children - Thomas Share born in 1880, Walter Share born in 1882, Mary Elizabeth born in 1884, Beatrice Share born in 1886, Ellen Share born in approximately 1894 and William Share born in 1904. George Share father\'s parents were Henry and Ann Maria Share. Ann Maria\'s maiden name was Bache. Their youngest daughter\'s name was Alice Share and she married Benjamin Webb. Does anyone know any of the descendants of my distant relatives from Stourbridge? I am a granddaughter of Mary Elizabeth Vickers (nee Share) who was born and grew up in Stourbridge. Regards, Margaret Vickers (Rec'd 25th Sep 2015)

Hello!  I am so impressed with your website and am excited about the possibility of discovering new relatives in your town.  I live in St. Louis Missouri in the US and am looking for anyone connected to my Evers family from Stourbridge.  My great grandmother was Sarah Jane Evers, born December 9, 1850 in Stourbridge.  Her father was William Evers, who was not born there but died in Stourbridge on May 7, 1876.  Sarah Jane\'s mother was Phoebe Richards Evers and was born in Stourbridge in 1826.  Sarah Jane married my great grandfather, James Alfred Lane, on August 5, 1877.  They eventually came to the US. I would love to hear from anyone who might be connected to this family !  Thank you so much for the opportunity to post my message on your website!

I am tracing Dawes (Daws) family in particular descendants of Samuel Dawes b1788 and Phoebe Billingham. They were married in 1809 in Kinsgwinford (St Mary\'s ).  According to my tracing their first child was not born until 1816.  Which seems strange.  They later over to Newport near Monmouthsire.  If you have any information re above I would appreciate it. I am descendant from their son William Dawes 1826/1877 who married Mary Ann Meese and migrated to Australia in 1877 he is my great great grandfather Regards Judy Turner (Rec'd 17th April 2015)

My great-grandparents eldest daughter Rinah Ellen Marlow, born in Spratton, Northants.. in Sept 1869.  She was brought up almost from birth by her Uncle & Aunt, George & Annie Marlow in Blissworth.  They had all moved to 2 Wheeler Street, Stourbridge by 1901 where Gorge became a wagon builder with the GWR.  Rinah met and married a Chief Post Office Clerk, Ernest Whittingham from Market Drayton in April 1892, moving to 12 Baylie Street where they lived for the rest of their lives.  Anecdotally, it is said that there was a horse drawn carriage kept in a stable at the foot of their garden at the time of Rinah\'s death in 1949. All are buried in Stourbridge Cemetery.  I would very much like to hear from any other surviving relatives. David Marlow (Rec'd 23rd Jan 2015)
