[email protected] (rec'd 28th Oct 07) I now know the
Corn Exchange pub was run by Benjamin Asbury's future mother in law, Sarah
Ann Nevins. His second wife my grandmother and the daughter of the licensee,
was also a Sarah Ann. He was first married to an Annie Elizabeth Bowcott who
died after just a year's marriage. Benjamin's first child, my aunt Dorothy,
was born around the time they left Stourbridge for Brentford, Londo and there
seems to be some doubt Sarah Ann was her mother, can anyone out there help
on this? Sue Vaughan Gardener Family in and around Stourbridge and Kidderminster. Three Brothers:

I have been researching my maiden name for many years, the earliest Leregor/lerigo's that I have come across are from Pedmore, Old Swinford and Rock from 1545. My own line is starts in the Forest of Dean Gloucestershire and llangarren Herefordshire. Is anyone researching any of the above and has anyone more info on early ones. John Lerigo was innkeeper at Mopsons Cross near Rock 1580's. thanks Sharon nee Lerigo (Rec'd 14th Oct 07) I am researching my family tree and my great great grandmother was called Catherine or Katharine Hagarty and was born in Stourbridge around 1840 and possibly has a connection with Brittle Lane or Brettle Lane, she married William Tomlins who I think was from Lydbury in Shropshire, on the 1881 census they were living in Bury, Lancs, she also had a sister-in-law living with her called Susan Welsh who was also born in Stourbridge in 1852. Any info on these names would be a great help. Stuart Kelly (Rec'd 12th Oct 07) I am trying to trace the family of my great great grandmother Eliza Babbs. I had assumed she was born in Hagley, but according to the 1881 census she was born in Stourbridge in about 1849. She married Samuel Ford, a coal miner, in St James Church, Lower Gornal in 1870. I don't know her mother's surname but I'm hoping to find this if I can trace records of Eliza's birth. Eliza and Samuel had children called John, Samuel, Mary Ann, Sarah and Sarahann. After they were married they lived in Cinderhill and were living in Sedgeley in 1881. Susan (Rec'd 11th Oct 07) Thank
you for putting my request on your website. I have today received an email
from a resident of Hagley, with three extracts from Parish records relating
to my great great grandmother. Joseph FLEMING who owned Amblecote glassworks was my Great Uncle. His brother
Arthur was my great grandad. Their ancestor William FLEMING was born about
1779, I'm unable to find where, or who he married. He had a son, Joseph, who
insisted in each Census that he was born 1820 in Bromsgrove Worcs. I know
he lived at Stewkins, Stourbridge, where he died in 1899, working most of
his life in glass. Don't know how his son became owner of Amblecote though. June 2016 - HAZEL!! - Someone has been trying to contact you with some information but your email isn't working! Please contact this website again My grandmother
PHOEBE ATTWELL born 1881 was one of 11 children and I am trying to trace decendants
of her sister Polly and brother Richard who for some years lived in Stourbridge.
MARY ANN (Polly) ATTWELL born 1889 married twice, possible names ASTON or
MILLMAN. RICHARD ATTWELL BORN 1899 married RITA ?. both had children I remember
visiting both families as a small child in the 1940's. Possible addresses
- Polly - Union Street. Richard - Swan Street. I am also a Holt decendant (see below), with the same story regarding Aston Hall. My great grandmother was Hannah Holt born 1857. Do you remember being in touch a few years ago, when I started the Holt research. I am beginning to think that the link with Aston Hall may not be true or a distant branch of the family. The Holts did not occupy Aston Hall after the death of the 6th Baronet Charles Holt. in 1782 There is an interesting book on Aston hall and its owners from 1618 - 1864. called The Grand Old Mansion, have you read it. [email protected] (Rec's 23 Sep 07) Hi, I don't know
the area at all, I live on Isle of Wight, I have a very peculiar family on
my mums side and it has taken 15 years so far to try and sort out the mess,
my Grandad THOMAS CRUMP born 1876 was actually THOMAS SMART I have chased
all sorts of things and people trying to find him at last I found him and
his mother and the other children who were CRUMP'S - my gt granmother ANN/ANNE
WATKINS of Upleadon married JOHN CRUMP had lots of little CRUMP's he died
and she then married my Gt Grandfather STEPHEN SMART and here is where the
mess really starts. ANNE married in 1876 in Worcester to STEPHEN a batchelor
by all accounts his father according to Marriage Cert is THOMAS SMART - well
there are only married ones on Census but not to my gt gran or a single one.
I have tried in vain to unravel this lot. There is one marrying Stourbridge
in 1856 and another in 1865 march there is one marriage in Dudley 1863 also
a STEPHEN Born Dudley 1839 March 1/4 . I think there are two STEPHEN SMART's
born the same time as I have two Deaths STEPHEN SMART age 61 1893 and one
age 71 in 1910 is there anyone that has one of these STEPHEN's that can help
me. There is also a STEPHEN SMART aged 10 in 1851 living on a canal boat Worcester.
Then there is another family living in Greens Norton that fit the mould that
STEPHEN is a single man living Monmouth area, my grandad used to say he lived
near the Black Hills I found him in Mathon Worcs on 1881 and then Ealing London
in 1891 which is where we all come from. I would appreciate any help at all,
how far would Stourbridge be from Dudley or Cherry Orchard (which is another
place I know that they lived). Also the JOHN CRUMP marrying my gt gran in
1863 was he elderly as I have a feeling that he was and that some of the CRUMP's
were his from a former marriage. I am in Australia and interested in contacting anyone with information on
the family consisting of William Frederick COMPSON, Cabinet Maker & his
wife Ellen SMITH. Their issue seem to be Ann Elizabeth, William Henry, Emily,
Albert Edward, John Christopher, Arthur James, Polly, Walter H, & Alice
L COMPSON. In the 1881 Census they were living at 29 Brook St, Stourbridge
except for Ann. Hi, I am reseaching my Family Tree on my mothers side. My Great Grandmother was Lucy Baker who was born in Lye in 1869. She Married a James Hughes and they ran a cafe in Bewdley called 'Hughes' then moved to Birmingham. Here siglings were Nancy, Elizabeth, Zephariah & Lephanias.Lucy's farther was Uriah Baker on 1836 and married to Elizabeth. Uriah's father was Zachaiah Baker born in 1903 in Oldswinford. I have been told by another family member that they were Primitive Methodists. If anyone out there has or knows any connections to these familys I would love to here, especially concerning there names.Gaynor Thomas [email protected] (Rec'd 28th July 07) Hello, I am researching the Holt Family name ( My Mother was Mary Holt.) Her Grandfather was Eli Holt. His Father was Thomas Holt of Brierley Hill and mother Mary Dipple from Oldswinford. Her father was George Dipple. Now there is a family legend that the Holt's were related to the Holt's of Aston Hall in Birmingham. The family trade was in Pottery and Glassworks. Eli moved to Birmingham, and married Harriett Walker. They had three sons, William Thomas, Jesse, and Alfred Holt. Jesse is my Grandfather. He came to America with Thomas Shotton, his cousin from Stourbridge. Jesse married one Eliza Jane Ansell, she passed on and then he married Catherine Conaty, in New York City. They had one child, my Mother Mary. Now I have many questions. Does anyone out there know of the family legend? Is anyone out there related to the Holt's in the legend? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for allowing me to inquire into my roots. Gerry Flynn (Rec'd 27th July 07) I am really struggling to find out details of ADELAIDE SARAH HERIOT FIGES who was born in STOURBRIDGE around 1832. Her father's name was Francis Figes. If anyone knows anything please contact me at [email protected] (Rec'd 17th July 07) Hi, my paternal grandfather was William Leonard Baker who was born in Stourbridge in 1884. He was living there in 1912 when his second daughter Edith was born before moving to become a miner in Maltby South Yorks. He died as a result of a pit accident in 1924, hence I never knew him. He married Edith Clara Barrett in 1909 in Birmingham. Do any Stourbridge Bakers recognise the connection? Would love to hear though I know it's a long shot. Linda. (Rec'd 9th July 07) Searching for
information and artifacts regarding an old tobacco Hi, I'm trying to find out information about my Newman relatives who lived at New Street, Stourbridge and Union Terrace, Stourbridge in the 1840's. Names I have are: James (head) Ann (wife) Maria, Mary Ann, Thomas, Edwin, Elizabeth and James (Children). Edwin is my GtGt Grandfather. If anyone has any information please contact me at [email protected]. Thank you (Rec'd 26th June 07) My gt-grandmother
Elizabeth Mary Rose Swindell and her sister were living according to the 1841
census at the home of Jane Woods in Colby (Colley?) Gate, Cradley. In 1843
her marriage certificate states she was married from Wollescote House, Old
Swinford. Would this be the same as Wollescote Hall as I understand this was
still belonging to the Milward family at that date? I would be grateful for
any suggestions. Hi from Australia - I was wondering if anyone out there could help me with any information on Charles Stone . He was the head master of Oldswinford Hospital in Heath lane Stourbridge from 1928 till 1950 Thank you, Angela (Rec'd 8th May 07) Hi, my name is Colin Harlingten and I live in Western Canada. I am trying to ascertain the name of the Catholic Church in Stourbridge (Oldswinford). I would also like to know if this church was around in the 1850s and 1880s. I have ancestors who were christened and married there but nowhere on the records does it give the name of the church. If anyone has any information they may contact me at [email protected] Thank you (Rec'd 1st May 07) We are doing some work on the Heathcock family tree and will be coming to
the Stourbridge area June 11th to 14th this year. Currently we live in Canada.
My Father was Harold Heathcock son of William Heathcock, born 1881 in Brierly
Hill, Dudley, Staffordshire. He was married to Hannah E. Haden, born Dec 1882.
William's father, also named William, was born circa 1849 in Kingswinford,
Staffordshire and died between 1881 and 1891 in Dudley. We were wondering if
there are any direct descendants or relatives still living in the area and
whether there is anyone who might be interested in meeting us. Hello, my name is Gail and one line of my ancestors came from the Lye, Stourbridge, Shepherd's Brook, Quarry Bank area. My great great grandparents were Thomas Dudley b1847 Lye (son of Benjamin and Eliza Barnbrooks) and Drusilla Baynton c1855. I've managed to track the Dudleys quite successfully but I can't find the Bayntons before the marriage in 1873 at all. Thomas and Drusilla were both living at Gig Mill when they got married and Thomas was a spade maker. Druscilla's dad was James. They married at St Thomas'. On censuses after their marriage it says Drusilla was born in Bewdly but I can't find any trace of her name or any variation of it. I noticed on Thomas' 1871 census entry that close by there was an area that read something like Beaudly Bank or Beaukly Bank. Could anyone clarify what it actually says as maybe this was where she was born? I would love any information on the Baytons or indeed the Dudleys. You can contact me on [email protected] (Rec'd 15th Apr 07) I wonder if you could help me i'm looking for the Nordon family tree my father was james thomas nordon known as tom he was born in he lived and farmed the ridge farm wollaston in the 1950s he had 4 brothers, Frank,Richard, freddrick, and george who died in infancy non but dad had children, my grandad was James Nordon he was a coal haulier he married eliza rock in 1903 if you have any information please feel free to contact me thank you (Rec'd 8th Apr 07) Hi, I'm looking
for any relatives I may have in Stourbridge. My late father was born Stanley
Davies in 1915 and lived at 7 Talbot Street, Lye. His mother was Lily and
his father I believe was Henry or may have been known as Harry. He may have
had brothers who were killed in WW2 and possibly 2 sisters, one also called
Lily. It appears he was married to a local lady, possibly Elizabeth in 1936
and had a daughter called Shirley before leaving the area in 1945 and remarrying.
Any information to fill in the considerable gaps of his life would be very
much appreciated. Hello! Can you please help? I'm trying to find the date of birth and mothers name of great great grandad John Moore, who married ann(e) Turner in Oldswinford Parish church on 7th May 1854. Their wedding certificate says he was 24 and his father was William. Father and son were labourers. The married couple later raised their family at Cradley.many thanks, Sharon (Rec'd 4th April 07) My
name is Peter Adams. Some time ago, on a genealogical bulletin board, I made
contact with a lady in Canada who was researching the Adams family from Old
Swinford. It turned out that she was my cousin - umpteen times removed. Unfortunately
I lost her e-mail address when a virus wiped my computer's hard drive (yes,
I know I should have had a backup). I am posting this in the hope that my
cousin visits this site, and will contact me again. I would also be grateful
for any help to break through the brick wall I have hit with Richard Adams
of Old Swinford - boot and shoe maker - born 1803. [email protected] I have been trying to find in the last6 yr's my gr.gr grandfathers parents

Hello from Australia ...looking for links to Charles Smith and Rebecca Tristram, both from Stourbridge, who married and went to Madras in India, he as an army bandsman and she as a nurse. They had two sons in early 1880s so were probably born around 1855 - 1860. Any help gratefully accepted. With thanks, Liz Agnew (Rec'd 28th Feb 07) Walter and Frances Williams + family lived in Prescott Street, Oldswinford, Stourbridge in 1861. Does anyone know anything which might help me? Suzi Head (Rec'd 8th Feb 07) Hi , my name is Rob and I am trying to trace the Stevens family. My Great Grandfather was Noah Stevens who was first cousin to the Stourbridge benefactor Ernest Stevens. Noah worked for Ernest and was sent to Wales to learn manufacturing techniques at the local Stamping Mill, and decided to stay. Noah's father was Joseph Stevens who was a bother of Ernest's father Edward. I would appreciate any information relating to the family and can be E-mailed at [email protected]. I was also sent information by a very kind lady called Maxine, in regards to a previous search, who failed to give her contact details stating that there was going to be a memorial day for Ernest Stevens sometime in August, I would also appreciate any information about this event. Thanks, Rob (Rec'd 19th Feb 07) Hi, my name is Keith Kirkhope. I live in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. My sisters are currently in Australia and they have discovered the identity of our grandmother on our mother,s side. She married our grandfather, John Dick in The Parish Church of St Philip, Sydney, Australia on 3. October 1911. At the time of her marriage to our grandfather she was a widow and her previous married name was Lillian Franks from Stourbridge. Her father,s surname was Dorvie or Davie. I am writing to ask if you have any information on her in your records. Many thanks for your attention. Yours sincerely, Keith Kirkhope [email protected] (Rec'd 16 Feb 07) My name is Mike Thomas. I live in Stonehouse, Glos and have found your website
purely by chance whilst researching my family's past. Three families from
the area contribute: Capewell, Haverd/Havard and Newton, all being born and
living in/around Kingswinford until Isaac Newton (b20Jan1846/married 20Nov1869)
and his wife, Sarah (Ann)(nee Haverd or Havard (b13Oct1848)), and family moved
south to Greenwich London between 1881 and 1891. Grateful for any info surrounding:
-- Definition of Capewell family whose Phebe/Phoebe married George Newton
(b1822) on 2May1842. Know from wedding cert her father was Thomas Capewell
- miner. Found one of that description in 1841 census with wife Ann and daughter
Phebe (b1826) plus other children. Am assuming it is right family, unless
anyone has better info! -- Detail on James Haverd (variously spelt Havard
or, as on death cert, Havoard). According to 1851 census (can't find anything
1841) born in Anholt-Kothen (Saxony). Married Elizabeth Edwards (whose parents
remain a mystery apart from father being John Edwards (miner)) on19 Sep 1853
(although they seemed to have been together since about 1847/8) and died on
3 Aug 1857. Cause of death stated as 'Manslaughter against Thomas Jones'.
The latter appears to have been lodger with the family - certainly lodging
with widow on 1861 cenus (and new born child - Thomas!). Any further info
on circumstances appreciated! -- Nothing needed on Newtons at present, except
to express my admiration of the industry of this family - they certainly made
a major contribution to making GB the industrial giant it became in the late
19th century! I can be contacted on [email protected]. I have just found your website, and hope someone may help. My grandad Arthur Luddington Angel Roberts, lived in Stourbridge, early 1900s for over 10 years. the family lived in Clifton Street,No: 1,next to the corner shop. Ludd and Ada had nine children, Maude, Vera, Marjorie, Ron, Stan, Tom, Doug and Gladys. We know very little about Ludd before 1900,when he married Grandma Ada. We believe he had something to do with the design,or construction,of Stourbridge Library, but this may be a family myth.I am trying to build a family tree, but have hit a brick wall. I would be most grateful if anyone, has heard from an old relative,of Ludd. My Mother was his oldest child Maude. Val Hampton (Rec'd 26th Jan 07) I just stumbled on your wonderful website! So far I have not been able to find out where Beefeaters Field was. I believe at one time there was a pub called the Beefeaters. I wonder if anyone can tell me anything about this address? [email protected] (Rec'd 13th Jan 07) I would like to thank all the people who have responded to my query above, so far, about Beefeaters field. Lye Linda , Nigel, Lavinia and Mike who all had ancestors living there at the same time that mine were living there. I have found the information very interesting and have found more friends through your site. From information I have received, it appears that Beefeaters Field was a street in the Lye Waste area At the time of the 1881 census my greatgrandfather, William Green, who was a master tailer, lived there with his family. The building must have been fairly large because he employed five workers. Thanks again for a great web site. I hope other people are as lucky as I have been. Many thanks, Beryl I am trying to
trace any families with the surname Farr in the Stourbridge or surrounding
